Quick answers

  • Solid light: something needs attention. It's usually safe to drive a short distance, but get it checked soon.
  • Flashing light: a serious misfire. Slow down, avoid hard acceleration, and get it checked right away.
  • Common causes: a loose gas cap, an oxygen sensor, spark plugs or ignition coils, or an evaporative emissions leak.
  • In Collin County: a lit check engine light almost always means an automatic emissions test failure.

The basics

What the check engine light actually means

Every car and light truck built since the 1996 model year has an onboard diagnostics system, often called OBD II. It watches your engine and emissions equipment, and when something falls outside its normal range, it stores a trouble code and turns on the check engine light.

That's all the light tells you: the computer found a problem. It doesn't tell you what failed. There are hundreds of failure codes that can trigger the check engine light, from minor to serious.

The U.S. Department of Energy's advice is simple: when the check engine light comes on, have your vehicle inspected by a mechanic. Problems behind the light can reduce fuel economy, increase emissions, and lead to costly repairs later.

How serious is it?

Solid vs flashing: know the difference

Solid light

The computer found a fault that isn't an emergency right now. The car may drive normally.

Check your gas cap first. If the light stays on after a few drives, or the car feels different, book a diagnosis.

Get it checked soon

Flashing light

This usually means a severe misfire. Unburned fuel can go into the exhaust and overheat the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part to replace.

Ease off the gas, avoid towing or hard acceleration, and get the car checked as soon as you can.

Get it checked right away

Usual suspects

6 common causes of a check engine light

Loose or damaged gas cap

A cap that isn't sealing lets fuel vapors escape, and the system flags it as a leak.

Try firstTighten it until it clicks. The light may take a few drives to clear.

Oxygen sensor

Oxygen sensors measure the exhaust so the computer can adjust the fuel mixture. A failing sensor can hurt fuel economy.

You may noticeWorse gas mileage or a rough idle.

Spark plugs or ignition coils

Worn plugs or a failing coil cause misfires, which is often what makes the light flash.

You may noticeShaking, hesitation, or loss of power.

Catalytic converter

The converter cleans up exhaust gases. It usually fails because of another problem, like an ongoing misfire.

You may noticeA rotten egg smell or sluggish acceleration.

Mass airflow sensor

This sensor measures the air coming into the engine. A dirty or failing one throws off the fuel mixture.

You may noticeStalling, hesitation, or poor mileage.

Evaporative emissions leak

The EVAP system traps fuel vapors. A cracked hose or bad valve lets them escape.

You may noticeOften nothing but the light, or a faint fuel smell.

Code vs diagnosis

Why a free code read isn't a diagnosis

A trouble code points to a system, not a specific part. A misfire code, for example, could come from a spark plug, an ignition coil, a fuel injector, or a vacuum leak. Replacing parts based on the code alone often means paying for parts you didn't need.

"All you get for 'free' is someone who will hook up an inexpensive code reader."

That's why EBA provides a full diagnosis of your check engine light. It takes more than plugging in a simple code reader. Our technicians use factory level computers and then do the detective work to confirm the cause. A check engine light diagnostic fee will usually cost around an hour's worth of labor, and we don't charge for work that you don't need.

  1. Read the codesWe pull stored and pending codes and look at the live data behind them.
  2. Test the systemWe test the parts the code points to so we know exactly what failed.
  3. Explain the fixYou get a clear answer and a quote before any repair begins.
  4. Repair and verifyWe fix it, clear the code, and confirm the light stays off.

Collin County drivers

Your check engine light and the emissions test

Texas ended the annual safety inspection for noncommercial vehicles on January 1, 2025, but emissions testing did not go away. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Collin County is one of the counties that still requires an emissions test.

A lit check engine light almost always triggers an automatic emissions test failure, because the car's onboard diagnostics must report no emissions related fault codes to pass. If your registration is coming up, fix the light first. Our post on Texas inspection rules in 2026 covers the details.

Frequently asked

Check engine light questions, answered

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

If the light is solid and the car drives normally, it's usually safe for a short time, but get it checked soon. If the light is flashing, slow down and have it checked right away, because a severe misfire can damage the catalytic converter.

Can a loose gas cap turn on the check engine light?

Yes. A loose or damaged gas cap lets fuel vapors escape, which the system reads as a leak. Tighten it until it clicks. The light may take a few drives to go off.

Will my car pass emissions in Collin County with the check engine light on?

Almost certainly not. A lit check engine light almost always causes an automatic emissions test failure in Texas. Fix the problem before testing.

How much does a check engine light diagnosis cost at EBA?

A check engine light diagnostic fee will usually cost around an hour's worth of labor. Call (972) 442-6400 for a quote on your vehicle.
